One day after trading away Russian forward Mikhail Fisenko the Vancouver Giants drafted Danish forward Sebastian Svendsen with the 71st overall pick in the 2009 CHL Import Draft. Svendsen is listed at 5'11, 165 lbs.
Last season Svendsen played for Frolunda of the Swedish Junior League where he scored 6 goals and added 6 assists in 37 games. He also had stints with two Under-18 teams in Sweden where he recorded a combined six points in eight games. During the 2008-09 season HockeysFuture.com had the following to say about Svendsen: "Svendsen is the next big hit coming from the country which most popular sports are soccer, handball and cycling. He has been ripping up the Swedish U18-league for his team Frölunda and he has recently been promoted to the U20 team for which he scored his first goal already. With three more years of eligibility, expect Svendsen to become one of the leading players on the Danish U20 team in the next few years." At the 2008 World Junior Hockey Championships the then 16 year old went pointless in five games playing for Denmark but at the Under 18 World Championships he scored twice and chipped in one helper in six games. He returned to both tournaments in 2009 and posted similar numbers. Discuss the selection of Svendsen with Vancouver Giants fans in our Vancouver Giants Forum. |
