The Vancouver Giants are showing the rest of the Western Hockey League that they have every intention of defending their Memorial Cup championship. Wednesday night in Kelowna the Giants posted a come from behind 2-1 win over the hometown Rockets.

As expected the game opened up with a fight as Garet Hunt had the mittens on the ice just three seconds in as he squared off with Rockets Captain James McEwan. It was Hunt's third fight in as many games. Despite the early fireworks the game moved at a snail's pace until the third period when the scoreboard finally got some work in.

Cody Almond opened the scoring for Kelowna just three minutes into the third period putting a loose puck past Tyson Sexsmith. The Giants responded however as the Kelowna goal kicked the Giants into high gear. Less than four minutes after surrendering the goal Evander Kane got his first goal of the young season on the powerplay to tie the game.

The highlight of the night however came at the 11:56 mark of the second period. James Wright took a pass from Spencer Machacek and showed a ton of dangle by undressing a Kelowna defenseman and putting a wrist shot top shelf on Kristofer Westblom to give the Giants a 2-1 lead.

The Giants shut the door for the final eight minutes to secure their third win of the season and now prepare for their home opener against these same Rockets Saturday night.

Vancouver outshot the Rockets 36 - 16.

GiantsBeat.com Player of the Game:  James Wright. The 17-year old forward's goal was a thing of beauty and ended being the winner. Wright continues to impress as he's growing into the #1 center role quickly. Should Milan Lucic return from Boston the potential combination of Lucic, Wright and Michal Repik will strike fear into opposing defenseman and goalies alike.
