The Vancouver Giants have found lightning in a bottle and aren't going to give it up anytime soon. Coming off of last weekend's 3-for-3 performance and last night's overtime win in Seattle the Giants came out flying against the Everett Silvertips. In the first period the Giants outshot the Tips 19-3 but were unable to get a puck past Leland Irving. But the home crowd was brought alive in the second period when captain Spencer Machacek broke down the right side on a shorthanded two-on-one with Mitch Czibere and snapped a shot that eluded Irving for a 1-0 Vancouver lead. Less than two minutes later the crowd was brought to their feet for the expected Garet Hunt vs. Brennan Sonne scrap at centre ice. Despite Sonne's attempt at a UFC-style Superman-punch the two pugilists traded blows early and often with Hunt getting the bigger blows in late. With a one goal lead and the crowd in a frenzy it seemed only a matter of time before the Giants put it away. But that's not how it happened as Zach Hamill and Kyle Beach scored goals in the final three minutes of the period to put Everett on top with only 20 minutes left to play. Beach, Hamill and Dan Gendur each ended up with two point nights. Just after the four minute mark of the third period Mario Bliznak erased the goose egg in his goals column with his first of the season and the game was tied again. With the benefit of three third period powerplays the Giants were able to hold momentum on their side. With 2:36 remaining Hunt scored his second goal of the season, banging in a loose puck from five feet out. The Giants held off the attempted late push from the Silvertips and have now won five consecutive games. The Giants host Spokane Sunday at 5 pm. GiantsBeat.com Player of the Game: Evander Kane. All coach Don Hay asks of his players is to work hard every shift and demonstrate a commitment to the team and tonight Kane gave him just that. Despite earning only a single assist Kane was a force to be reckoned with on every shift and his poise with the puck would have the casual observer thinking he's a veteran and not a 16-year old rookie. After assisting on Bliznak's goal he set up the 20-year old with another sweet pass that wasn't converted thanks to the Everett defender holding onto Bliznak's stick. If Kane can continue to play like this throughout this year he may earn some attention for Rookie-of-the-Year honours. |
