The teams played a scoreless first period with Everett outshooting the Giants 8-6. The Giants trailed 1-0 after a powerplay goal from Kyle Beach just 2:43 into the second period but Jon Blum responded with an extra strength tally of his own just 2:32 later. The tie held up until Brandon Campos scored another powerplay goal at 6:49 to give Everett their second lead of the night. Uber-pest Mike Wuchterl kept the powerplay goal trend alive with his first of the season by deflecting a Juraj Valach point shot past Leland Irving. The Giants outshot the Silvertips 16-8 in the second period. The Giants took the lead for good when Chris Cloud took a behind-the-net feed from Michal Repik and buried his first goal as a Giant at 8:14 of the third period. Less than one minute later another new Giant got his first of the season as Mike Berube got a pointshot past Irving to give the Giants a 4-2 lead. Spencer Machacek add the empty-netter with 46 seconds remaining to seal the deal. The game featured a number of fights including Garet Hunt and Speedbag Brennan Sonne squaring off at the start of the game. Both players landed big punches and the fight ended as a draw. The second fight of the night was Wuchterl taking on Team Ontario bench warmer Kyle Beach. Wuchterl landed a big blow early but Beach took a clear decision against the Giants overager. Mike Berube got into the act taking on Graham Poteur with Berube losing his balance after taking a couple of quick rights from Poteur who scored an easy decision. Only 11 seconds later Beach took on Craig Cunningham and had little trouble winning a one-sided fight as Cunningham looked somewhat overmatched in his first WHL fight. The final fights came with just 12 seconds remaining as Mike Piluso took on Matt Strong with Strong winning the fight and Evander Kane and Jordan Mistelbacher fighting to a draw. GiantsBeat.com Player of the Game: Tyson Sexsmith. The 18-year old goalie faced 26 shots in one of the Dub's most intimidating buildings and never once looked like he was uncomfortable. With the Giants giving up 11 powerplays Sexsmith was kept busy throughout the night and may have been the team's best penalty killer. Considering that 180 feet away Leland Iriving was his counterpart it was hard to tell that Sexy wasn't the NHL first round pick playing tonight. |
